Would anyone be interested in a day's mountain biking at Glentress near Peebles before the end of the year? Glentress has a variety of purpose built trails suited to different abilities and is lots of fun, have a look at this video of a section of the Blue trail on YouTube. There is bike hire (£22 a day) and most importantly a café on site. There is more information about Glentress here. Let me know what think.

I might be persuaded if there were a few other newbies going Mountain biking has never really been something I've fancied but it might help improve my bike-handling skills!

I will try and get a day pass. We did a Glentress trip a couple of years ago and it was a big success.

I would be up for it too subject to same caveat as Douglas! Assuming P not reading this but imagine we could probably drag her along too. I have a few sat commitments coming up so assuming I'm free.

Following previous successful trips to Glentress near Peebles, in previous years, Glenmarnock Wheelers are planning another day’s mountain biking for members, friends and family, in the coming weeks. Carl has kindly undertaken to co-ordinate the event, so please feel free to contact him by email at the following address: carljoseph@hotmail.co.uk. Glentress is one of the 7 Stanes trail centres spread across the Borders and offers a range of world class mountain biking. You can read more about Glentress here. Glentress has a variety of purpose built trails that are tailored to different abilities and are graded green, blue, red and black according to difficulty. I propose we start off with the blue trail (16km, 2 hours approx) and also take in the Skill’s Area where we can brush up on some basic bike handling skills. There are good facilities at Glentress including bike hire, changing space, café, etc. Bike hire starts at around £22 for a day and once a date has been confirmed you can book your hire here. We’d like to open this up to friends and family so please feel free to extend this invite. There are walks and easy cycling alternatives at Glentress and a Go Ape for anyone wanting something slightly different. I have created a Doodle Poll to see which dates suit everyone. Click on the following link, enter your name and tick that dates that work for you. If you are interested in coming along, please complete this poll by Sunday 16 November. doodle.com/ds3x4b7v7x87m2qg

I've done the poll but wasn't at home to check which days (if any) Struan has swimming competitions or other commitments. Also - I've just realised I can't make the 18th as I'll be doing the Strathpuffer that weekend - if the Glentress trip was before then to allow me to brush up my (ahem) "skills" that'd be ace!! Cheers Bob

Thanks to everyone who has completed the poll so far, there's still a few days left for anyone who is interested (Keith?!). It looks as if the 7th December is the best date at the moment. Bob are you riding as a team or solo? For those that don't know Strathpuffer is a 24 hour sufferfest in the dark, cold and more often than not snow.

Carl - I do it as part of a quad. I take my hat off to the solos and pairs. That would be worth contemplating if they ever bring back the puffer lite, but in January? Madness!!!

Carl, are you riding this, too? Sounds just like the sort of mad midlife crisis thing I could imagine to attempt. My last (and only) 24 hour run was 30 years ago in a relay team of 10. If any of you people ever are a slow rider short..... Ole

Hi Ole, I'm not planning on riding the Strathpuffer this time. Perhaps we should get a team together for 2016.

Thanks everyone for completing the Doodle Poll. The most popular date was Sunday the 7th December, only Robert couldn’t make this date (sorry Robert, I’m happy to do another trip if you’re keen). We have: Carl Virginia Douglas Ole and his daughter Bob Struan Trefor Alastair It takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to get to Glentress, so can we arrange to meet at 10am at the main car park at Glentress. Here’s the link to the website again www.7stanesmountainbiking.com/Glentress---Innerleithen It’d be good to arrange car sharing for this trip. Can I suggest we switch to email to organise this as it’s more secure if people are swapping phone numbers and addresses. I’ll send an opening email. If you are planning to hire a bike I’d suggest arranging this in advance. I phoned the bike hire and they will give us a bit of a discount so it will be £18 per bike. Here’s the number of the hire shop at Glentress 01721 724522, when you phone you’ll need to give your height and also say that you are a Glenmarnock Wheelers club member to get the discounted rate. Things to noteCar park fee is £5 for the day and the machines accept cards Hire bikes will come with helmets, but you may want to use your own Kit – you can use your road bike kit. It will most likely be cold and probably wet so winter kit is advisable (tights, waterproofs, gloves, glasses, etc) If you are hiring a bike it’ll come with flat pedals so wear trainers, your road shoes and cleats won’t be compatible. Bring a small rucksack and pack the usual snacks, fluids, repair kit and tools Bring a change of clothes, it’ll be muddy There are showers and changing facilities on site Most importantly, there is a café on site for cake and coffee If any other Glenmarnock members would like to come or if you have any questions, please drop me an email carljoseph@hotmail.co.uk

Hope you all enjoy Glentress. I'm on Christmas shopping duty. This MTB trip might whet your appetites for the SXC (Scottish Cross Country) series of races next year.
