Kristofers projects, Project 1(Raleigh Aveo) After a good performance in the Crit on the green we have taken on the challenge of improving our pace. Kris has nominated me as his mechanic. Improvements made are upgraded cogs, chain and changed the front crank set from a set on ebay we removed the inner ring and the new crank length has been changed from 172.5mm to a short 150mm hopefull this will improve performance.
Project 2 (Trek Bontrager Aluminium) this bike has been kindly donated by a friend to help kris in his endevours. We have decided to totally strip the bike for full overhaul. The plan is to renew worn parts and shorten the crank which is stripped due to seized pedals even a welding plant could not free it off. When finished Kris hops to race the bike as it is very light.
Project 3 We are planning on building a track bike in time for the first Omnium in Dundee the first of the series. We are watching ebay to source the required parts with the intention of getting kris a New Bike for next season.
Any advice is kindly welcomed.
Scott Bryce, Kristofers dad

Sounds like the mechanic is busy. Short cranks will certainly improve cadence on the Aveo. I take it you are going to drill and tap the the cranks on the Trek to shorten them? You being a Rolls Royce Engineer I am sure will have all the tools you need but if you need anything bike specific I might be able to help, let me know. And dont forget to have a look in this forums free section for any bits that might help. My current box of free stuff is below, anything you want from it give me a shout. And dont forget to build the track bike Manchester spec, the spec can be downloaded from our website. Keep us posted on your progress. www.glenmarnock.proboards.com/thread/221/blacktop-disciples-karma-box

Update- We plan to convert the trek into a track bike its an aluminium frame with carbon forks. The crank has the required 11 inches and i can remove the braze on's.
Does anyone know a spray painter who does bikes. I have the shortened the crank arms to 150mm for racing not sure if thats allowed? Are 650 or 700 cc wheels best for youth racing we will need to buy track specific wheels and tyres i think?
Thanks for any advice in advance, Scott and Kris

You will need a fixed gear wheelset for the track but getting a fixed rear axle width to fit the frame would be tricky. Track frames are usually spaced at 120mm whereas the Trek will be either 130 or 135mm. In addition the Trek will have vertical dropouts with no scope for adjustment and this will make it very difficult to get correct chain tension on a fixed gear. You could always cut the old dropouts out and weld new horizontal dropouts (track ends) in but you will still have a rear end thats too wide for track wheels. If its a steel frame, thats not a problem as it can be cold set but if its alloy it cant be cold set without the risk of fractures occuring. Re wheel size 700c is the standard, but if you have excessive toe overlap 650c may be better but you would have to be careful you dont lower the bb too much. I think you are getting into a bit of a mind field here and would suggest you build up one good road bike out of the two you have. If one bike has v or cantilever brakes you could convert it to a cyclo cross machine if not then why not build up a winter road bike. Below some helpful links, the first about fixed gears, the second about frame spacing and cold setting. sheldonbrown.com/fixed.htmlsheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

Update fired the bike frame and forks into the body shop to get painted in the glenmarnock colours. Oredered headset cogs, chain, bottom bracket, grip tape, pedals, shoes oh and a chain ring. cranck set being adjusted to suit kris at the rolly polly. Will assemble to track standard might need your experience tref i have noted the points above I noticed the drop outs but have a plan for them. But there is always something turns up. The aveo is set up to go racing its a bit heavy but it will build up k's legs for next season. Kris was awsome at Kirroughtree today wants to try a red route now. Thanks again for the advice I will check it out.

Hi Scott and Kris Have a look at this thread about a guy would built his son a track bike using old tubing and lugs from an old bicycle. Interesting track drop outs and drillium to the cranks. Not so sure about the geometry but a good effort. www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=265841
